How to update your mumstyle for the new season trends!
It is a little hard to believe given our current weather but summer is around the corner and it is time to update your wardrobe.
At the beginning of every season stylists and the media dictate what is hot and what is not! This some of this season’s favourite trends are the boudoir, grown up gingham, micropleats, low slung or paper bag waisted pants, sequins, ruffles, off the shoulder and the elevated trackie.
For most of us interpreting the trends as they are seen on the runway and working out how to wear them in real life can be tricky. Blindly following the latest trends can lead to style disasters. So the trick is to pick the trends that are right for you and your lifestyle and it is equally important know which ones are not!
One trend that I will be giving a miss is the boudoir slip dresses and pyjama styled separates that filled the runways this season. They look lovely on the runway models but I am more likely to look l like I have forgotten to change out of my PJs before I left the house.
So how do you update your look when you have limited time and money? For many busy mums it can feel an ordeal to have to change their wardrobe but there are some easy ways to update for the new season.
The easiest way to update you look for spring is to change your shoes. Simply take your classic jeans, tee and blazer look, roll up the bottom of your jeans and swap your boots for a sandal for an easy Spring look.
Nude coloured shoes are another a great way to bring your look into the new season as the lighter colour automatically lifts the look of the outfit. Nude shoes also look gorgeous teamed with a floral dress or skirt and they are undoubtedly the most flattering colour to wear with bare legs because they make your legs look longer.
Try changing your accessories for Spring. Swap heavy jewellery and woollen scarfs for a light colour muslin scarf in a print or floral. Shades of bright orange are everywhere this season so try orange accessories to make your outfit look fresh and new!
2. Bold stripes
Stripes are a timeless classic that seems to popular every summer. The striped casual tee shirt dress is back for another season and the perfect style for the busy mum. Buying a couple of inexpensive striped tops or dresses is an easy way to update your look without breaking the bank. Don’t be afraid of horizontal stripes! One of the biggest fashion myths is that stripes make you look bigger – they don’t! In fact they create an optical illusion that deceives the eye into seeing the opposite. This season the stripes on the runways were in really bright colours in so don’t be afraid to be adventurous with your striped colour choices. Try our Coral Striped Nursing Dress!
3. Dressed up denim
We all love our denim! Dressed up denim and chambray also make a reappearance this season. The advantage of this look is that it is the fabric itself that is the trend so you can pick the styles that suit you best. Denim and chambray is all through the stores at the moment so you can go for the standard denim shirt or branch out into a chambray shift dress. Our chambray shirt dress is perfect when you are not pregnant too!
4. Check out gingham
The gingham is one of this seasons trends that can easily be incorporated into your mumstyle. The denim shirt has been the mum’s best friend for a couple seasons now. We have worn them tied over a maxi or open over our favourite tee. So why not try the same outfits but with a gingham shirt instead? Team it with plain colours or denim.
5. Elevate your trackies
Fashion doesn’t always have to be uncomfortable! One trend that mums will love is the elevated or dressed up trackie. The track pants that we once wore to exercise have evolved into a range of casual pants styles that can be worn outside the house or gym. There are a range of styles from drop crotch to tailored so you can pick the style that you feel the most comfortable in. We offer a couple of trackie pants styles that are non maternity specific so you can wear them after pregnancy too. The trick with look is to team them with the right shoes. Think designer trainers or your favourite converse not the shoes you wore to the gym.
- Bombed out
My favourite jacket for the season is the bomber jacket. It is the perfect semi casual option for a busy mum and so versatile. They look great styled with the elevated trackie or dressed up with jeans and heels. There are so many different options this season. From really cool patterned or embellished versions in satins or almost sheer fabrics to heavier matt styles. Personally I have been eyeing up a little embellished one from local online store Shine On.
7. Give them the cold shoulder
If you are looking for something that is a little dressier the bared shoulder trend is a great option. The good thing with this trend is that shoulders look great regardless of your age or weight. The only rule for this trend is make sure you have the right bra. Seeing a bra strap totally ruins the look. That being said there are quite a few styles that show a little shoulder but still allow you to wear your normal bra.
So ladies it is time to get summer ready! Take advantage of the new season to have a little fun, try some new things, play with layers and different looks. But remember to choose styles because they make you feel great, not just because they are in fashion. Yves Saint Laurent said “Fashions fade. Style is eternal!”
